Railing Needed

Council members are asking township officials to look into providing a railing along the pathway leading into the newly opened West Windsor Arts Council building at the former Princeton Junction firehouse.

The opening celebration last month drew hundreds of participants, but council members said they worried about the safety of the elevated, handicapped accessible path, which features a gradual incline toward the building, but has no railing.

Councilwoman Linda Geevers mentioned her concerns during the council member comments portion of the October 4 meeting and said she worried that someone could risk falling off the raised portion of the pathway, especially during icy conditions in the winter.

“I feel very strongly that we need to look at rails,” she said. Business Administrator Robert Hary said that township has already considered the matter. “We don’t disagree with you,” he said. “We are looking into it for the future.”

Geevers said, however, that action should be taken immediately.

Councilman Charles Morgan also said that he had already volunteered to began looking into bringing an artistic railing design to the pathway. The West Windsor Arts Council celebrated the opening of its new home last month. The 75-year-old former Princeton Junction firehouse on Alexander Road was transformed into its new home, including a 125-seat performance space, an education space for classes, and a community meeting room-lobby-cafe, with Wi-Fi access.
