New Jersey Indian Association (JINA), a new organization in West Windsor, is having its inaugural picnic on Sunday, June 15, at West Windsor Community Park, at noon.##M:[more]##

The non-profit organization was formed by 12 West Windsor families to promote the socio-economic, educational, cultural, and recreational needs of the Indian community.

Recently JINA members met with West Windsor Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh to discuss issues in the community. “We were having pot luck dinners but wanted to expand the group to include community service,” says Laxmanji Pothuraj, a West Windsor resident since 1999. The group now has close to 30 member families.

Pothuraj, a volunteer with the West Windsor Recreation Department for eight years, is an accountant for New York State and commutes to Manhattan every day.

His wife, Subhatha, is a registered nurse, also in New York City. Their daughter, Sonia, is a freshman at High School South, and their son is a sophomore at South. They are all involved in JINA’s public speaking program.

“The event is family-oriented with activities for children,” he says. Food include pot luck as well as grilled food including kababs, burger, and hot dogs; pasta and samosas. JINA members gain free admission. Membership is $25 per family.
