How to Eliminate Bullying from Your Life will be presented by Jon Satin and Chris Pattay, authors of “Living an Inspired, Empowered, and Joy-Filled Life: 365 Daily Tips to Get You There,” a focus on life, relationships, and business, on Saturday, May 18, at 3 p.m. at Sylvan Learning in Hamilton. It is free with registration.

The center is owned by Mark Kance, who lived in both Princeton Collection and the Gentry in Plainsboro as a child. He played baseball with the WWP Cubs and later played and taught tennis. He attended Wicoff and Upper Elementary schools in Plainsboro. “Open classrooms were a challenge at the high school,” he says. Kance graduated from the Hun School in 1998.

“I was bullied as a kid and in many stages of my life,” says Kance. “Children can be harsh toward one another. When a child feels insecure they put it off on someone else. Energy is not gained or lost — it’s just transferred.”

Kance graduated from Hofstra University with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and received a master’s degree in teaching from the College of New Jersey. He taught fourth and sixth grades in Pennsylvania.

“Teaching provided a great start to the future,” he says. When Kance learned about Sylvan he saw it as an opportunity to continue his work. “Being in an education business I can help others by managing the entire learning experience and I want to make sure that kids and families get all of the success possible from the program.”

“Teachers are often bullied — although the word bullying does not always come to mind. Many people are bullied in workplace situations,” says Kance. “There are ways to overcome it and there is a lot we can learn.”
