Cornerstone Community Kitchen is set to celebrate the first anniversary of serving free meals at Princeton United Methodist Church on June 5.

On Wednesdays, CCK serves nutritious, hot meals from the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen from 5 to 6 p.m. at the church on the corner of Nassau Street and Vandeventer Avenue.

Dozens of volunteers, including Emma Glasser who attends John Witherspoon Middle School, set tables and serve entrees, vegetables, a green salad, a fruit salad, juice, bread and dessert.

CCK was thought up by Larry Apperson, a resident of Skillman and a long-time member of PUMC. Since its conception, CCK has served meals every Wednesday and become a place for community fellowship where visitors can practice speaking English.

Along with food from TASK, community members, Girl Scout troops and businesses, like Panera Bread and the Bagel Hole, donate baked goods. Zorba’s Brother donated a turkey dinner during the holidays.

Community members also volunteer their time working as servers and hosts; including Glasser, who working on her bat mitzvah Hesed Project.

“It was like a community here, everybody was so friendly, so happy to be here. I am glad to have helped,” Glasser said.

Volunteer organizer, Beth Zeitler of Plainsboro, said CCK’s greatest need is volunteers to prepare salad and fruit.
