Plainsboro Hits the Big 9-0

Plainsboro Township’s 30th annual Founders Day celebration will be held on Sunday, May 3. The event, commemorating the incorporation of the township in 1919, will kick off with a traditional parade through town to the festival grounds at the municipal center. Featured participants include marching bands from West Windsor-Plainsboro High Schools North and South, Central Jersey Antique Auto Club, Chinese Drummers, Wicoff and Town Center PTAs, Giant Library Puppets, Plainsboro’s Town Crier, sports leagues, school clubs, local community groups and cultural organizations, and fire and rescue vehicles.##M:[more]##

For the fifth year, area residents and representatives of community groups will participate in a parade of international flags to celebrate Plainsboro’s cultural diversity. Residents and community group leaders interested in participating in participating as a flag bearer should contact the recreation department.

Scheduled to depart from Waters Edge Park on Pond View Drive at 12:30 p.m., the Founders Day parade will follow Edgemere Avenue to Plainsboro Road (at the Dey Road intersection), then follow Plainsboro Road to the municipal center. Children who would like to march or ride bikes with the parade may do so by joining the Kids Kaboose at Wicoff School on Parkway Avenue.

Following opening ceremonies at 1 p.m., attendees may participate in a wide range of activities, including live entertainment. Featured performers include Give & Take Jugglers, Mad Science, Jazz Ensembles from High School South, Jazzercise, high school bands, folk performances by the Plainsboro Chinese School, martial arts demonstrations, and cultural performances.

The Plainsboro Historical Society will open Wicoff House with displays highlighting local history, as well as sponsor an antique photo stop. Commemorating the anniversary, a special “Plainsboro Then & Now” exhibit will also be featured by the township.

New this year, will be old time fun provided by the Doodle Bop and Wiggle Puppet Theater and Wahoo Flying Flea Circus and Phydeaux Medicine Show. Games for children of all ages and food concessions sponsored by local non-profit groups will also be featured. Amusements for children include a superslide, radical run, miniature golf, and moon bounce, while others may enjoy giant lawn chess, sports activities, and meteor moon shot.

Event parking will be available at Enterprise Drive across the street from the municipal center. There will be no public parking at the municipal building. Police will be directing traffic and residents are advised that road closings and detours will be in effect in the vicinity of the municipal center throughout the day until 5:15 p.m.

The Founders Day Celebration will be postponed only if it is raining in the morning and forecasted to continue all day. Program changes will be announced on radio stations as well as the recreation information line 609-799-0909, ext. 550. The rain date is Saturday, May 10.
