Speed Reduced on Section of Village Road

The stretch of Village Road between Old Trenton Road and the Robbinsville Township border has now been reduced to 35 miles per hour — which means the speed is now consistent along the entire road.##M:[more]##

“”We wanted to make sure we have a consistent speed limit throughout the whole Village Road,”” said Mayor Hsueh, who requested the study after comments from residents.

The study, said township engineering technician Brian Aronson, was completed in 2007 using speed radar guns and tubes running along the ground. The road is divided into three sections, and the first two sections were already marked at 35 miles per hour. But the third, adjacent to the Village Grande, was designated at 45 miles per hour.

The study’s results showed that the speed of traffic traveling along the first two sections was consistent with the posted speed. In the third section, “”we found that based on (state) regulations on what is considered a residential district, along with some of the speed data, we were able to lower it down to 35 miles per hour,”” Aronson said.

The state Department of Transportation usually determines speed by the 85th percentile rule — or, at which speed 85 percent of people on the road are traveling. In this case, the vast majority of residential developments along the road also played a factor, Aronson explained. The section of Village Road East between Old Trenton Road and the Robbinsville border meets the requirements of a “”residential district.””

Township officials posted the new speed limits a few weeks ago, and the new speeds are in effect, he said.
