After being delayed by two weeks, the expected 90-day closure of the Alexander Road Bridge is now set to begin this Friday, July 11, as construction crews will be working on the new roadways that tie into existing roads and the completion of the bridge, retaining walls, and roundabout.

The bridge is scheduled to be closed until September 25, and the project is expected to be completed by November 27.##M:[more]##

The bridge will be replaced with a single-span steel superstructure bridge, and will carry two 12-foot lanes, two 4-foot shoulders, and 6-foot sidewalks on both sides. The existing “T” intersection at North Post and Alexander roads will be replaced with a modern roundabout, and new curbs, sidewalks, bicycle-compatible lanes, and landscaping treatments will also be provided. The work is being done by the state’s contractor, IEW.

The official detours guide motorists on Alexander Road heading east back to Route 1, and then to Route 571 to cross the railroad tracks. But many motorists are expected to use Vaughn Drive to cut through the train station to get to Route 571, or use Bear Brook Road to get to Meadow Road and cross the tracks there.
