Lauren Mandel of West Windsor created “Volunteer!” a video presentation of volunteer opportunities within the community as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project. She presented it at both West Windsor and Plainsboro libraries this summer.##M:[more]##

The 30-minute presentation focuses on APAW (Animal Placement Agency of the Windsors), the Twin W First Aid Squad of West Windsor, Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic, the Bicycle Pedestrian & Alliance of West Windsor, and Girl Scouts of West Windsor-Plainsboro. Volunteers from each group give insights as to why they volunteer and how others can join.

“Volunteerism is not only for the benefit of the cause and for the optimistic struggle to better the world, but it is also for the emotional and physical betterment of individuals,” she says. “Volunteering is for everyone, people of all ages and interests, and it is a wonderful way to meet people. What my Gold Award is centered on is helping people to find organizations that fit them and to encourage them to fall in love with volunteering as I and many others have.”

Mandel, who has already earned her Bronze and Silver Girl Scout awards, says that the most difficult and time consuming part of this project was the video editing. “Everyone I interviewed was so enthusiastic and had so much to say that I had hours of film to work with and 30 minutes to narrow it all down to. This project was well worth the effort, and I feel that the final product has captured the most important and the most powerful clips of every interview.”
