In his first bodybuilding competition, Phillips spent 13 weeks preparing for the event. His daily routine involved four hours of weight and cardio training, with just cardio training on Saturdays and Sundays. His training was supervised by Dwayne McDaniel, owner of the Diamond Gym in Maplewood, New Jersey.

Nutritionist Jason Arntz supervised Phillips’ diet, keeping him on a strict regimen. John Kemper, a judge for the Mr. Olympia competition, provided advice and guidance with regard to diet and physique presentation.

Phillips, a fourth degree black belt who supervises all Taekwondo and Kickboxing classes for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students, at the center, plans to pursue a bodybuilding championship while continuing to compete in kickboxing fights. His current kickboxing titles include World Professional Kickboxing Organization (WPKO) World Light Heavy Weight Champion, World Kickboxing Union (WKU) World Light Heavy Weight Champion, Professional Kickboxing Federation (PKF) World Light Heavy Weight Championship, and the PKF New Jersey Light Heavy Weight Championship.
