In honor of Dr. Steve Mayer and his commitment to the community at-large, we will continue his monthly column in a manner that represents the needs of the community and reflects on issues impacting our students and schools.
If asked, most parents would say that their top priority for their children is to ensure that they are safe. Making them happy runs a close second. Occasionally, maintaining their safety interferes with making them happy. For most of us, it is a constant struggle to balance both of these objectives.
When listening to people talk about their parenting strategies, I have always found it interesting that each has his or her own unique style. The things that may work for one family may not work well for another. One thing that I know for sure, regardless of parenting style, is that consistency works best.
As we approach prom and graduation season, it is vital that we are consistent in our message to our kids about making smart choices. We want our children to enjoy these significant events and to do so safely and responsibly. We would like their memories of high school to be joyful. When they reminisce in the years to come, we would like them to recall great times with their friends rather than senseless tragedy. This starts and ends with their ability to make smart choices.
Talk to your children. Ask them questions about the things no one wants to talk about. Remind them that you love them. Stress the importance of following the law and of using common sense. It is possible to do so in a loving way and make a lasting point.
I will not quote statistics or pretend that I know more about your children than you do. I do know this though. The more a community socializes an idea, the better the outcome for every member. This one is simple. As we strive to keep our kids safe and happy, ask them questions even if it is uncomfortable. Talk to them even if it feels awkward. It matters.
I’m convinced that if we as a community of parents help our children navigate these celebrations and focus on smart choices we can keep them safe and make them happy.
