Changes are afoot for Gloria Nilson & Co. Real Estate, and local broker John Burke couldn’t be more excited.
On April 4, HomeServices of America, the second-largest residential real estate brokerage company in the country, acquired Gloria Nilson. The news meant the locally based Gloria Nilson would now be part of a national company, with more ability to help when clients move to a different part of the country.
Burke, manager and real estate broker for Gloria Nilson’s Robbinsville office, said the acquisition is big news that allows his office to have the best of both worlds.
“It allows our company to have the national backing of one of the strongest players in the international real estate market and maintain our local brand,” Burke said. “Gloria Nilson & Co. Real Estate has been a force in Central New Jersey for 40 years. In an age that local companies are absorbed by bigger ones this is the best of both worlds. Local expertise with national backing and a business model that they support their local brands. Also, we are now part of the second largest relocation company in the world. HomeServices Relocation will increase our ability to assist families moving into the area and help us place relocating families worldwide.”
Unlike many who become real estate agents after pursuing a different career or two, or after buying or selling a home, Burke earned a bachelor’s in finance and real estate from Appalachian State University in North Carolina in order to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a real estate agent.
Out of college, he worked for his father’s real estate company until he sold it, and then worked with the new company. Twenty-three years ago, Burke left to take a role with Gloria Nilson & Co. Real Estate. He’s been there ever since.
The longevity and lack of turnover among agents at Gloria Nilson & Co. Real Estate is what appeals most to Burke.
“In an industry plagued with turnover, I’ve been here 23 years with virtually no turnover,” Burke said. “It is difficult to provide high levels of service if the agents are always changing agencies. We have great, high producing agents.”
There are 55 sales associates in the Robbinsville office, the “vast majority of them are full-time, active agents,” Burke said.
Burke attributes employee longevity to their office culture.
“We treat people fairly,” Burke said. “We work through issues. Everyone follows the rules. We have had top producing agents who have not followed the rules, and we had a parting of the ways. We are selective in choosing agents. Last year our office sold more than the other 25 central Jersey offices.”
When Burke started with Gloria Nilson it was a much smaller company. Last year, they hired 20 people. He finds instead of leaving for other agencies, his agents retire. It virtually never happens that someone leaves and goes to another agency, he said.
While helping to grow the Robbinsville agency to become the No. 1 company in Mercer County in closed sales volume from 2003 through 2016, Burke makes it a personal mission to serve others.
“I have chosen to do what I can to make the community a better place through my family, my work life and my personal life,” Burke said. “I have done this by committing more than 200 hours per year towards service to my community over the past 20 years.”
Burke is active professionally as a member of the Trend MLS Executive Committee since 1999, and since 2011 has been a member of the Mercer County Association of Realtors Grievance Committee. Through his office, he started hosting Alex’s Lemonade Stands to benefit research for childhood cancer. To date, the office has raised more than $10,000. The office also creates Thanksgiving baskets for HomeFront and accepts Toys for Tots donations at the holidays.
