In spring 2016, Dr. Navleen Kaur Thind opened Academy Dental on Route 33 in Hamilton.
The 2012 graduate of New York University’s College of Dentistry designed her private practice with her patients in mind. This includes having appointments seven days a week, personally answering after hours calls, having a spa-like setting, and accepting most insurance policies.
“Our setup is very different from other practices,” Dr. Thind said.
Though Academy Dental opened as a solo practice, it is open seven days a week, including holidays. The practice recently added Dr. Atalinder Bindra, who has expertise in implants and advanced oral surgeries. Dr. Radha Manchikandi, a dentist with five to six years of experience as a general dentist, will soon join the team. Both are also graduates from NYU’s College of Dentistry.
Academy Dental handles all types of dental needs, including extractions, fillings, whitening, scaling and root planning, crowns, bridges, root canals, dentures, oral cancer screenings, smile makeover, pediatric dentistry, digital X-rays and mouth guards. The only exception is while they do offer quick ortho/invisible braces, otherwise known as 6 Month Smiles, they do not offer full orthodontics, but can make recommendations. The addition of Dr. Bindra means they can also handle more specialized treatments.
“Dentists are the one thing people worry about most,” Dr. Thind said. “They show up to Academy Dental, and we calm them. Our office is staged to alleviate their fears. When they walk in the door, there are no gadgets to show. We have a calming waterfall, and a spa feel. It relaxes quite a bit of our patients. They no longer have that fear when they leave.”
One non-dental service Academy Dental offers is a meditation room.
“Patients come in to meditate, and they work up to going in the dentist chair,” Dr. Thind said. “If they are not comfortable, they can leave and try again. So far, each patient went to the dentist chair. We also have an Xbox room for children which some adults like, too. We are not like a typical dentist office. We are staged so you feel as if you are visiting a friend’s house.”
Their goals are that every single patient leaves happy, and that their team is also happy.
Dr. Thind has advanced training in dental care. She strives to provide the most advanced and pain-free dental care to her patients. She is certified by the National Board of Dental Examiners.
Academy Dental does not use an answering service. Instead one of the dentists personally answers calls at all hours, even in the middle of the night. A dentist is always available to handle dental emergencies. They also accept walk-in appointments.
In the past, Dr. Thind encountered patients who could no longer afford to visit a particular office because their insurance changed or because they no longer had health insurance. When she opened her own practice, she decided she would find a way to make it possible for her patients to stay, even as they changed jobs and had different insurance policies. She made it a priority to accept all major insurances, she said.
Along with this, Academy Dental offers a membership which “offers treatments to patients at prices that are affordable,” Dr. Thind said. With this plan, they hope to encourage people to not wait too long in order to receive the dental care they need, but resist getting because they cannot afford it.
Dr. Thind lives in Lawrenceville with her husband and two small children. In her spare time, she practices yoga and enjoys traveling. She is an active community volunteer and sponsor of events in Hamilton.
