You don’t have to be an avid runner to take part in Bordentown’s annual St. Patty’s 5K race on Saturday, March 15.

If strolling is your thing, you can join in the two-mile Family Fun Walk with up to 200 others who will likely be sporting green attire and perhaps painted faces.

But if running is your passion, you’ll have a chance to test your speed with up to 700 others in the USA Track and Field (USATF-NJ) Grand Prix race, worth a 500 point value.

The event, hosted by the Education Foundation, begins with the 5K race at 9 a.m. The course map shows the race (slightly over three miles) commencing at Crosswicks Street, looping around Farnsworth, Courtland, Prince, West Chestnut, back to Farnsworth and Crosswicks and finishing by the Clara Barton School yard.

“People get involved and show up for this event because they care. We do this for the kids,” said Education Foundation member and race director Joann Dansbury. Without the Foundation trustees, town volunteers, individual contributors and the town businesses sponsors, she said, the event wouldn’t be possible.

Money earned from the event will benefit the five schools in Bordentown’s district, Dansbury said. Each school is set to receive $1,500, and individual teachers who have been approved for grants will receive money their projects. Money will also be provided for college scholarships, including Burlington County College.

Some approved grants over the past few years include Math Under the Stars, Middle School Piano Lab, Celebrate through Good Nutrition, and several reading programs.

Dansbury expects close to 1,000 runners, walkers and spectators. She expects that business owners will benefit from the event because many people will stay in town to shop and dine.

Runners compete with others in their age group, and the top three runners in each group receive prizes. The groups include three categories of teens and young adults—under 14 years old, 14 to 17, and 18 to 21—and several categories for people 22 to 80 and over. The Family Fun Walk starts after the race at 10 a.m. Participants will be served light refreshments in the Clara Barton gym.

Participants who register online or by mail before March 7 receive a long sleeve shirt on the day of the race. Registration fee for the 5K race is $25, (USATF-NJ members $22); Family Fun Walk, $20 for adults and $10 for kids. Servicemen and women, police officers and firefighters will receive discounts.
