On Sunday, Oct. 21, The Pennington School held its fourth annual Run for the Cure race to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. A record number of 250 students, faculty, parents, and friends of The Pennington School turned out to participate and raise money for the foundation devoted to seeking a cure for breast cancer. The event, organized by the senior peer leaders group, raised more than $6,000 for the foundation.

Peer leaders, a select group of seniors, serve as mentors to groups of freshmen; they also organize several significant community service events each year. Pennington School senior and peer leader Collette King, a Lawrenceville resident, explains that the peer leaders had created an expectation on the campus of participation in the walk/run. They announced the race at a school community meeting and used social media, including Twitter, to publicize the event. This year they also introduced the “Pink Cup” award, to be given to the team that expressed the most “pink spirit.”

“The seniors displayed outstanding commitment and energy from the start of the planning five weeks ago through to the finish line,” says teacher and peer leader advisor Erin O’Connell. “It was a beautiful atmosphere at the race—spirited and energetic. There was a strong sense of community as the runners flew through the streets of Pennington.”

O’Connell adds that the peer leaders had run the course a few days before the event, placing flyers and pink balloons at each of the houses along the course. “As a result, townspeople were out cheering on our runners, and sporting pink balloons on mailboxes and trees,” O’Connell says. “Our smiles accurately depict the joy and pride we all felt on Sunday. It was indeed a great day.”

The Pennington School is an independent coeducational school for students in grades 6 through 12, in both day and boarding programs, with a current enrollment of 484 students. The curriculum is college preparatory, with an emphasis on fostering the development of the whole student through academics, athletics, community service, and the creative and performing arts. Within the curriculum there are also specialized programs for students with learning differences and for international students.
