When Ewing residents are hit with a craving for frozen yogurt, they don’t have to go far to satisfy it.
Ewing’s own frozen yogurt store, called Yo-Licious Twist, opened its doors on Halloween night 2011.
“We brought a treat to Ewing,” said Walter Henderson, who owns the shop along with his fiancé Marisa Hutton.
Hutton had dreamed for three years of opening the shop. She originally wanted to open an ice cream store, but decided to go down a healthier path instead and entered into the frozen yogurt craze.
Henderson, Hutton and her daughter Amanda, a junior at Ewing High, designed the store from scratch. Without any previous business experience, the trio chose the location, Amanda designed the store’s mascot and they all got to painting, building and decorating. Amanda even enlisted some of her friends to help paint in their purple and teal color scheme.
Once finished, they gave their store the motto “Dream It, Build It, Enjoy It.”
“That’s what we did. We dreamed about it for a long time, then we built it and now we’re enjoying it,” Hutton said.
A favorite of TCNJ students, local residents and families alike, Yo-Licious Twist features many unique frozen yogurt flavors, one sorbet, one ice cream and 20 different toppings. Customers take a cup and dispense their own yogurt from one of the four vending machines, mixing and matching any flavor combination they desire. They then can add whatever they want from the toppings bar, including fresh fruits like blueberries and mango, sweet treats like cookie dough chunks, granola, syrups and even sprinkles. Frozen yogurt flavors include strawberry, euro tart, cookies ‘n cream and chocolate peanut butter. The combination possibilities are endless.
Hutton said customers have proclaimed Yo-Licious yogurt the best they’ve had. She attributes the great taste to fresh ingredients and the cleanliness of the machines, joking that everything in the store is often over-cleaned. The family takes great pride in doing things the right way and this is reflected in the quality of their products.
Because of their success, Henderson and Hutton have been approached to franchise their store, but turned it down. They are considering eventually opening a second store, but have yet to decide on a location.
“I don’t want to spread myself too thin. I want to perfect what I have,” Marisa said.
Other things that add to the store’s appeal include free wi-fi and ample seating.
Customers are encouraged to add to the store’s fun atmosphere by taping their personal artwork to the walls.
“We want it to be a destination. There’s not really anywhere to hang out in Ewing,” Marisa said.
Yo-Licious Twist is quickly becoming that spot.
The family business has really become a part of the community. They sponsor local sports teams and host fundraisers for Ewing schools as well as the fraternities and sororities at The College of New Jersey.
“For me, [it’s about] giving back. I’ve always loved to help the world,” Marisa said.
Opening Yo-Licious Twist has been a family bonding experience for Walter, Marisa and Amanda. They take pride in their store because they have put time and effort into every aspect. From the floor tiles to the yogurt flavors, it’s all been chosen with a personal touch.
Marisa said she is thrilled she’s been able to bring this experience to her hometown.
“Our dream has come true,” she said.
