Women know the wait between having a mammogram and getting results can be nervewracking—even when they receive a positive report in the end.

The doctors and staff at Quakerbridge Radiology Associates understand that, which is why in recent years they have instituted their mammography results-while-you-wait program.

Dr. David Leder, one of four physician-partners at Quakerbridge Radiology, said same-day mammographies have helped set the company apart, and that they offer advantages in addition to the quick turnaround. When Quakerbridge Radiology has preapproval from referring doctors, they can also initiate follow-up exams immediately if the mammogram show irregularities that warrant further analysis.

“The vast majority of patients leave here knowing studies are normal, see you next year,” Leder said. “If [doctors] give us permission, we can do multiple steps if they are necessary.”

Leder said every OB-GYN office he and his partners work with has seen the logic of that approach, and Quakerbridge Radiology has been able to convince many local physicians of the benefits of preapproving multiple studies should they appear necessary.

“[Patients] aren’t going to have the extra hassle of needing a second prescription,” Leder said. “Or, patients may fall through the cracks and not return for second study [despite a suspicious mammogram.]”

Quakerbridge Radiology was formed in 2000 as the result of a merger of two separate entities. For the last three years, they have based operations in their main office on Quakerbridge Road in Hamilton, with a satellite office on Lawrenceville-Pennington Road in Lawrence.

Leder said the physicians in the group—himself, Dr. Dennis Balgowan, Dr. Fred Schlesinger and Dr. Mark Tenenzapf—have been serving the Mercer County community for more than 30 years combined.

Leder said as a non-hospital-based, outpatient-style facility, Quakerbridge Radiology is focused on patient and referring doctor satisfaction.

“We are the most user-friendly facility in the community,” he said. “We will provide things in off hours if it is possible—if we can do it, we will. Customers always remember the bad experiences. And they remember the things that were above and beyond. They don’t remember the routine services. They remember when something gets done after 5 p.m.”

Quakerbridge Radiology offers a wide range of imagine services, from arthrograms to CT scans to X-rays. They provide magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) services, they are also the only facility in the area to offer open MRI services onsite.

For some patients, claustrophobia or weight can make a session in the standard, closed MRI difficult or impossible. Another advantage of the open MRI onsite, Leder said, is that if a patient scheduled for a closed MRI finds the experience difficult, he or she can be rescheduled for the open MRI.

Quakerbridge Radiology has a staff of more than 30 professionals, including technologists who operate the machinery, but only the radiologists analyze the images they produce and determine what they might show.

“If we don’t have high-level technologist we don’t get good images. If we don’t have good images, I can’t make a good diagnosis,” Leder said.

Leder acknowledged that as imaging technology has become more sophisticated, patient expectations have also risen. Those increased expectations put more pressure on physicians and technologists than ever before to be experts in their field.

“What doctors’ offices want from us is, patients are satisfied, had a good experience, reports are returned in timely fashion, and if something is critical we’re going to let them know,” Leder said. “We’re always trying to stay up on the latest and greatest. That’s important, but I think of equal importance assuming you’re at a level that’s required is the personal care.
