Gary Delhagen has dabbled in several fields, but he ultimately decided on plumbing.

A main reason, he said, is that the industry provides steady work.

Delhagen is owner of Delhagen Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning in Hamilton. Before starting the business, he studied nursing at Mercer County Community College. He also worked in the insurance industry. While he was in school, he always did some kind of construction work, including carpentry, painting and roofing.

Delhagen worked for a few local plumbers. When he first started his business, about 15 years ago, Delhagen worked in the field. Recently, the owner has transitioned to a more managerial role.

Although Delhagen doesn’t do much manual fieldwork anymore, he said he still likes to be present at jobsites.

“I will come out and take a look at what’s going on, and make sure the guys are doing it to my expectations,” Delhagen said.

He said that it is all part of having his name on the company’s truck: he has to be comfortable with the service his staff provides.

One of the things most important to Delhagen is that his staff treat customers’ homes with care. Delhagen said he is adamant about his workers using dropcloths to protect carpets.

“It’s a respect issue,” he said. “You have to respect everybody’s house.”

Delhagen Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning provides a variety of services, including work on water heaters, boilers and snow melt systems. The company has also serviced some items that many might not typically associate with plumbers.

“We’ll fix and repair most anything. We’ve worked for eye doctors, taking care of machines for them, (and) the dentist specialty equipment,” Delhagen said.

He said that while they don’t repair appliances, like washing machines or dish washers, they do work on the connections to those appliances.

When choosing products to use for installations, Delhagen said he looks for brands that are dependable. Another important factor is that the products are energy–efficient and affordable to run. Some lines the company offers are York, Heil, Weil–McLain and Bradford White.

Delhagen Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning also renovates kitchens and bathrooms, and provides drain cleaning services. Delhagen said that employees on his staff have either completed training, or are being trained.

Delhagen said the company stands by its work, and if a customer has a problem with something they have serviced, they make it a priority to fix the issue.

He said it’s important for him to get feedback from customers.

“That is important to us, people’s opinions of who we are. Again, my name’s on the truck. I’ve got to make sure people are happy,” he said.
