Piyali Sircar and Hema Sunderasan, both students at High School South, participated in the Waksman Scholars Program at Rutgers University, founded on the philosophy of teaching science by allowing students to participate in a summer research project. This summer the team of students focused on comparing the genes in a nematode with other species of worms and higher eukaryotes.

Dr. Meenakshi Bhattachraya, a science teacher at High School South, also participated. During this school year, the students will periodically return to the Waksman Program for seminars and other activities culminating in a June poster session.

Janki Kapadia of West Windsor, a senior at High School South, was among 100 students selected to attend Washington and Lee University’s four-week Summer Scholars Program, which drew participants from 29 states, Turkey, Bulgaria, and Argentina. The program is designed to give students a taste of college life, offering a choice of eight curricula, each comprised of three courses.
